I delivered a presentation to high school students who are preparing for Panhellenic exams (The Panhellenic exams are nationwide Greek exams that students take at the end of high school to compete for admission to universities) on my participation in an Erasmus+ project hosted by the Romanian organisation Asociatia Initiative Sociale. The session provided basic information about Erasmus+, an overview of the host organisation, and a summary of the knowledge and skills I gained, with a specific focus on youth unemployment in Europe. Following the presentation, I moderated a structured group discussion. We specifically discussed the overall experience of Erasmus+ projects, the value of non-formal education, the importance of intercultural learning, and the strong friendships that were built through this experience. We also talked informally about youth unemployment in Europe, the upcoming decision regarding the university they will soon have to choose and how this will affect their future, the importance of a well-structured CV, as well as some tips for job interviews they may have to attend later on.
The students followed the presentation with great interest, asked many questions, and learned a lot of new things. None of them were familiar with the Erasmus+ programs or the opportunities offered by non-formal education. They shared with me how much anxiety they feel about the exams and expressed that they see choosing a university as a decision that will shape their lives. However, after our conversations and discussions, they realized that life does not end with the exams, but rather something new begins. They also asked me for information about the Erasmus+ programs and how they can participate in them in the future. For my presentation, I needed a whiteboard, a marker, and an audience interested in the topic.
